Tokyo Daibutsu (Buddha), Jourenji Temple

On Thursday 17/12 we visited one of The Great Buddhas at Jourenji Temple in Itabashi-ku. This Buddha was originally built in 1977 to commemorate the victims of WWII and the victims of the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923. At 13m tall it is only 35cm smaller than the world famous Kamakura Daibutsu, yet this one is little known.

The kids were keen to light the incense as an offering to the Great Buddha.

The temple was surrounded by smaller Buddah’s and statues and you could buy tiny stone Buddah’s to either keep or leave around the temple for luck, ours is coming home with us.
